Love highlighted in NEON lights on a pink wall

Yes, you read the title correctly. Just like drug and alcohol addiction, love can be just as consuming. The study titled “The NeuroImaging of love” done by Syracuse University finds that love releases several euphoric chemicals like oxytocin, adrenaline, and dopamine into 12 areas of the brain. These parts of the brain are also lit up when doing cocaine. Yes. Falling in love produces the same chemical reaction on the brain as cocaine. Is it any wonder why love can be so intoxicating?

But just because you do coke does not mean you’ll become a coke addict. The same goes for love. People are completely capable of having healthy relationships. Even if they’ve suffered through a bad one. For love addicts, they may not be able to differentiate healthy vs toxic behavioral patterns in relationships or they may simply find comfort in those unhealthy habits. Studies suggest that 6% of the population are addicted to love, and while that may seem like a small percentage those are millions of individuals.

Do you find yourself constantly in an obsession with infatuation, relationships, or lust? Are your thoughts all-consuming on someone you’ve never even dated? Maybe butterflies are what you’re in constant search of because the thrill of anticipation excites you. ‘I hope they call’ or ‘let me unblock them just in case they text me’. If any of this resonates with you, you may be facing love addiction.

Take this short quiz below and see where your heart is. Please note that this quiz is NOT a substitute for an assessment by a professional and the results should NOT be seen as a diagnosis. If you find that you may be addicted to love it may be wise to seek professional help in this matter, as love addiction can be fought.
